Our Nation’s Future in Energy
Environment
For us, the true measure of progress lies in the consistent delivery of a better quality of life. As we continue to innovate to bring about greater comfort and convenience to our nation, we also try to do our part for the people – whether it is making education more accessible, supporting the economically challenged communities or cultivating a more active lifestyle.
But above all, we are most passionate about achieving environmental sustainability, without which none of our earlier efforts would truly be of any impact in the long run. That was the premise behind our latest crusade – the Manjung 5 power plant.
As the second ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plant in Southeast Asia (the other being its sister project, Manjung 4), Manjung 5 is capable of generating 1,000MW of lean electricity. To put it in perspective, the plant provides power for two million households, and together with the other Manjung power plants, it now supplies up to 23% of Peninsular Malaysia’s power needs.
More importantly, however, is the fact that we have been able minimise the cost of producing electricity, lower carbon emission levels, and still maintain efficiency at 40% with this initiative. By introducing clean carbon technology, and the latest in Environmental Monitoring Systems, Manjung 5 hopes to contribute towards our nation’s pledge to cut carbon emission levels by 45% before the year 2030.
Launched on 28 September 2017, the RM1 billion Manjung 5 power plant has been in operation for nearly half a year. Since its completion, the plant has created 1,200 new job opportunities, which has indirectly resulted in an increase in development and property value in the area, while also allowing small local businesses to thrive.
As an infra-rakyat project, our intention when we built the plant was to contribute towards a better economy and to create a positive impact for our nation. By taking steps to minimise our carbon footprint and empowering the surrounding communities, Malaysians can now look forward to having greater opportunities and better, brighter lives.
